My first Hour with Pinguy Linux

I've been wanting to install and use Pinguy Linux click here to download [link] as my daily drive for some time now. The latest version which will be v14.04 is not out yet so I'm driving an older version. I can tell you now I'm having a good time.

My version is the Pinguy 12.04 released in 2012 and based on Ubuntu 12.04, like many other distributions such as voyager Linux [link]

This is my 1st impression with Pinguy Linux 12.04

This is what I like, choose linux because

  • the dock still needs tweaking but I like it. Its the 1st time I've used a dock on Linux, and the side bar menu of folders on the right, the dock is called docky here on Pinguy.
  • A set of unique features in the availability of applications, Pinta for one instead of GIMP, I'm still to explore this latter, I hope it will help me escape the difficulty of GIMP
  • I always love LibreOffice on Linux, it definitely performs better here that it does on windows.
  • VLC is working as expected, awesome
  • Pinguy Linux is beautiful, its mazing its as beautiful as windows 8, though not as polished
  • the most important thing that happened was I connected to the Internet with my vodacom modem within the 1st 10 minutes without any hustles I couldn't do with on manjaro Linux
  • After the connection I clicked the update GUI, called the package manager. __in Pinguy its Synaptic Package Manager, No terminal, because I'm not willing to use the terminal, no! Linux is easy there should be no need for a terminal, I don't know the commands. So it was kind of really fun to update most Applications without the use of the terminal.

What I don't Like so much

  • the explorer/ called a shell in Linux, and I'm not speaking of Gnome for which this distro is mainly based on. In Pinguy we have Nautilus 3.4.2
  • It keeps on freezing when I multi task, the left hand bar with the menu's on the desktop shows me just how much RAM I'm using up, it will freeze when RAM is at 1.6GB, and my total RAM is 2GB, which brings me to my next pint
  • Why so much RAM use-up, just as now I'm merely playing a vlc video but I'm using up 1.24 out of 2 GB__I don't get it.
  • Horrible wallpaper, there is no single wallpaper that is attractive in any way, they're all angry and uncreative. I'll be going online to download wallpapers
  • I wanted to install the Google chrome browser fro the Ubuntu Software Center and I couldn't find it, but chromium is there, so ya!!
dock keeps on disappearing and I don't know why.

Some one said that Linux must standardize its applications meaning Linux must come together and make one distro, I totally disagree to this point, this would kill Linux which is based of innovation, yet again there are some applications that could work better if integrated together with other. Nautilus would do better if it learned a lot from

This distribution is really make for the 1st time user of Linux, with so many tutorials online and the fact that most applications are already available and that it will connect to the web so intuitively, all good reasons to choose Linux. Choose Pinguy.
